marginalised bodies, marginalised voices...
‘…the transformation of silence into language and action…for it is not difference which immobilizes us but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken’. (Audre Lorde, poet, novelist, essayist, 1984*)
These photographs, taken at demonstrations, are of a diversity of women (eg. older, black, with a disability and of different sexualities). As women with ‘marginalised bodies’ who are under-represented in the mainstream media, their voices are also marginalised. The images convey the courage, strength and creativity of these women. I have been inspired by Audre Lorde’s work since the early 1980s. My quote from her work here highlights the crucial importance of not remaining silent and of speaking and of taking action.
