older women

Images of older women remain scarce across the media and the arts in the West. Ageing women do not conform to stereotypical notions of beauty and femininity; pressure on women to undergo cosmetic surgery to preserve their youth is rapidly increasing. My photographs of older women from diverse class and cultural backgrounds highlight ways in which they are active subjects. The beauty of these women is expressed in the curiosity, vitality, and strength through which they engage with the world, notwithstanding physical constraints. Their individuality and attentiveness to the world is informed and enriched by their long experience of living. The extensive contribution of older women needs to be recognised and valued.
